Palpitations are a sensation that's felt inside the chest or in the chest. They are what is felt by the patient, always a good idea to feel the radial pulse if you can to check that that is regular or irregular and whether of course, this is normal for the patient. It is always good to check whether the patient has any pain with the palpitations or any shortness of breath with the palpitations. Palpitations can be simply due to anxiety and maybe a sensation rather than actual palpitation of the rhythm of the heart could be something a lot more serious and a cardiac arrhythmia which needs investigating straight away with a heart tracing.
